Работа с устным переводчиком

В Хьюстонской ассоциации переводчиков идут дебаты на тему необходимости обучения юристов работе с устным переводчиком в суде. Народ делится опытом. Очень забавно местами:
So I’m working today in one of the District Courts in Harris County, interpreting on a Motion to Revoke Probation hearing. The defendant does not waive his right to have the allegations read, and the baby prosecutor starts:

Prosecutor: Bla, bla, bla, bla [ . . . ], as provided by Article xyz, Section xyz, of the V.A.T.C.C.P.—

Me: [consecutive interpreting] según lo dispuesto por el artículo xyz, fracción xyz, del… [then I hit the breaks, interrupt the hearing and ask the prosecutor] I’m sorry, What does that mean?

Prosecutor: V.A.T.C.C.P.

Me: Right, but what does it stand for…

Prosecutor: Just say it that way, V.A.T.C.C.P.

Me: I’m sorry, but I need to know what that means, in order to translate it.

Prosecutor: Just tell him (defendant) that.

Me: I cannot translate it if I don’t know what it stands for.

Prosecutor: …
